We lined this up about a year in advance having never gone, but the experience was great. We went mid-May, and it's well shaded there. The temperature dropped lower probably than we were expecting, but weather was really perfect escape from the desert heat. I think the thing that surprised us a little was how enclosed the area was, not that it was so small or bad, but just up the hill west of us were homes, separated by a barbed wire fence, and to the east was a "wildlife preserve" field also fenced off asking patrons not to enter, so from the areal view, that threw us a bit for a loop. The kids who wanted to play capture the flag, struggled a little, but all in all, the place was really nice. Futhermore, they told us to fill out the card for parking to fish and just write that we were at the group campground, and that worked out just fine. So fishing was a nice bonus just a mile east up the road at Mingus Lake. Don't forget your fishing license!
Wonderful group camp! Hike/scenic viewpoint nearby. Lots and lots of tables, well spaced trees for Hammocking large groups, big cement fire pit, grilles, good view of meadow nearby. Bathrooms even smelled good.
